djwebb, do not worry! I have not read a book in chinese EVER. i have tried, but it's just too...
difficult. but i did pass HSK (got a decent 9). so do not panic.

the results for 模拟考试 (by BLCU) are known. the results for 初中考试 are available.
everyone in my university suggested to go check online for my score, which i did, with no result,

especially the "find a mistake in the sentence" and "insert 汉字". the exam was way more
difficult than I...

similar books in the UK or via Amazon, Studychineseculture.com feels like v good value. Maybe

If I recall correctly:
之 can mean he/she/it; it often means 的; and sometimes it means 行.
而 basically puts two sentences together, and can mean 'but', 'and' or another word that fits
well.
