China found new dinosaur species

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-12 17:02:56

Chinanews, Apr.12 - Chinese scientists recently affirmed that the
ornithopod fossil they discovered was a new member of the "dinosaur
family" in the world.
Chinese scientists unearthed this dinosaur fossil in Jilin Province in
northeast China three years ago. It is about one meter in length with a
115 mm skull. Judging by the features of its skull, researchers believe
that it belongs to a new dinosaur species and a new genus that had
remained unknown in the world.
The dinosaur fossil was named Changchun Dinosaur according to the
location of excavation and the place of preservation.
Researchers revealed that judging by the fossil, this dinosaur is an
adult though it has a petite stature. Since its two front legs are short
while the hind legs are long and graceful, scientists believe that it is
a mini-type dinosaur that likes to grab leaves with its front legs."
At present, about 650 to 700 species of dinosaurs in 350 genuses have
been described in the world. China alone has described and named about
100 species.

China found high-quality crude oil in Xinjiang

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-06 16:52:06

Chinanews, Jinan, Apr.6(By Li Bo and Xu Yongguo) - Shengli Oilfield,
China's second largest oilfield, has found in Xinjiang the first
successive base of resources -- P-2 Well -- and discovered high-quality
crude oil which is rarely seen in the world.
Of the best quality in the world, oil in the P-2 Well is rarely found in
China. It can be directly used to fuel tractors.
Mr. Zhang Shanwen, deputy manager and chief geologist of Sinopec Shengli
Oilfield Company Limited, said that the P-2 Well is located in Kuitun
City which is 80 kilometers to the north of Karamay Oilfield. It covers
an area of about 13.5 square kilometers with the oil reserve amounting to
7 million tons.
"Once a gold bean is found, it should not be the only one." As Zhang
expected, they soon drilled another well of similar oil quality, namely
the P-8 Well, indicating the good prospect of resources in this area.
Feasibility study report on exploitation of the P-2 Well has been
approved by Sinopec Group Company at the beginning of this month and the
well will produce 100 kilotons of crude oil this year according to plan.
This area is estimated to have more than 50 million tons of oil reserves,
and it is hopeful to become a 300-kiloton oil production base by the year
2008.

Western collectors favor Chinese artworks

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-05 09:01:49

The largest imperial jade seal of the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911AD) was
auctioned.

Shou Kwok Shau, director of the Chinese art division of Sotheby's Auction
House, was briefing participators on a Qing Dynasty vase.

Chinanews, Apr.4 - Chinese artworks are one of the focal points in the
global artwork market in recent years. China's rapid development has
undoubtedly changed westerners' ideas about collection. Chinese artworks
full of oriental characteristics have drawn the attention of collectors
in the world cultural market.
Western collectors are buying a wider range of Chinese artworks, whose
prices are rising day by day. Christie's auctioned more than 6 million
pounds worth of Chinese artworks in London in 2001 and the figure
skyrocketed to 24 million pounds in 2005.
Some western collectors and antiquarians choose to avoid traditional
channels, which are full of fierce competitions, of acquiring Chinese
artworks, and go to China to seek treasures directly. They are not only
eye-catching in auctions held in China but also go to campaigns in
artwork markets in other parts of the world.
Western collectors procure Chinese artworks for different purposes. Some
love Chinese art; some buy Chinese artworks to decorate their houses;
some regard such collection as investment.
Westerners are always strongly curious about China, a country with
mysterious oriental features. Owing to their excellent techniques and
workmanships and exquisite patterns and designs, ancient Chinese artworks
have extremely high value in both collection and investment.
